Fort George |
F is for Fort.
There are two historic Forts in the Niagara Region, that both date from the War of 1812.
Old Fort George is in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario and Old Fort Erie is in the town of Fort Erie.
Both forts were destroyed in the war, with Fort George being destroyed by artillery fire in a night bombardment from Lewiston NY, early in the war and Fort Erie being blown up by the retreating Americans in 1814.
Both forts were reconstructed as historical sites in the 20th Century and both are open to the public. There are many events held at both forts during the Summer, with Fort Erie hosting the really big "Siege of Fort Erie" battle re-enactment in August that I featured on Saturday in my "E is for Explosion" post.

Both forts also feature Ghost Tours at night.
I still haven't been to the one in Fort Erie, which
is something I'd like to correct this Summer. I've been a few times
to the one at Fort George and it's genuinely creepy, with a guide in
period costume holding a period accurate candle lantern as your only
source of light. Well, worth your time!
You took some great photos and, yes, those ghost walks were creepy. Remember the lit candle flickering but it was inside the room and it was completed closed up. In Fort Erie is that famous photo taken in the kitchen where you see an image...freaky!
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to go on the Fort Erie Ghost Tour!!!
DeleteI think Birgit took us here when we visited Toronto 9 years ago.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very cool place. It might have also been Fort York, which is a similar fort, but in Toronto.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! I remember Fort George with great fondness from a visit when I was six-years-old.
